On 28 March 2025, two devastating earthquakes struck central Myanmar, affecting over 17 million people across six regions and states. With more than 6.3 million people now in urgent need, the destruction has severely disrupted access to essential services. Nearly 70 health facilities have been damaged, and thousands of displaced people are sheltering in overcrowded and unsafe conditions. The crisis has hit women and girls particularly hard, with over 223,000 pregnant women now struggling to access life-saving care.
UNFPA is responding with a focused emergency plan to restore sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV), and deliver mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS). Working through mobile clinics, midwifery networks, and safe spaces, the response prioritizes the health, safety, and dignity of women and girls in both urban and remote communities. It also includes the distribution of essential medical supplies and dignity kits, as well as training for frontline workers to ensure continuity of care.
To carry out this critical work from April to September 2025, UNFPA is urgently appealing for US$12 million. This appeal will support life-saving services for 680,000 people in the hardest-hit areas.
